A technology strategy that aligns with a business strategy can help an organization when ready to grow by providing a clear roadmap for technology investments, initiatives, competitive advantage, cost-effectiveness, and flexibility.

Don’t grow up. Scale up.

No organization wants to stay the same size. Every business strategy contains a plan for scaling the organization as they grow. Is your IT department and technology included in that plan? Scaling technology needs can be complicated, and having a trusted advisor to guide you through that process is important.

Technology and business strategies need to align because technology plays an increasingly critical role in driving business success. Alignment is critical to ensure that technology investments and initiatives support the overall goals and objectives of the company.

Technology enables and supports key business processes and objectives when everything is aligned. As a result, technology is seen as a partner in the organization rather than a separate entity, and IT projects are more likely to be viewed as investments rather than costs. This leads to a better alignment of technology capabilities with business needs, resulting in the more effective use of technology and better ROI.

Why not plan for growth?

Having an IT/technology strategy in place can help an organization when they are ready to grow in several ways:

  • Scalability A technology strategy will help ensure the organization's technology infrastructure is designed to scale and adapt to accommodate growth. This will help avoid disruptions and downtime as the organization expands.
  • Support for business processes A well-aligned technology strategy will ensure that the technology infrastructure and systems are designed to support the business processes critical to the organization's growth. This improves efficiency and productivity, which can be especially important during periods of rapid growth.
  • Competitive advantage Having a strategic approach to managing your technology can help an organization stay ahead of the competition by providing access to new technologies and innovative solutions to give the organization a competitive edge.
  • Cost-effectiveness A well-designed technology strategy can help organizations control costs by identifying and implementing compatible technology solutions. This can help the organization manage costs as it grows without sacrificing performance or functionality.
  • Flexibility Having a well-defined technology strategy can help an organization be more flexible and responsive to change. This can be especially important during periods of rapid growth, as the organization may need to adapt quickly to changing market conditions or customer needs.

A good technology strategy can help an organization when they are ready to grow by providing a clear roadmap for technology investments and initiatives.

IT strategy is more than laptops and licenses.

While every organization is different, an IT/ technology strategy that aligns with your organization should include several key components.

A technology roadmap that outlines the organization’s technology vision and the steps to get there. First, look at where the organization is now, then look at where it needs to be to align with IT/technology best practices.  Finally, look at where it wants the technology to be eventually. This should include identifying the technology platforms, systems, and tools the organization will use to support its business processes.

The IT strategy should include a governance and risk management framework that outlines how the organization will manage and mitigate the risks associated with its technology investments and initiatives. When building its technology strategy, an organization should look at technology's financial, organizational, security, and compliance risks.

This should include a plan for allocating the necessary resources to support the organization's technology initiatives in the IT strategy. Personnel, budget, and accessibility are all items that need to be addressed in this part of the strategy.

Continuous improvement is a critical part of an IT strategy. Software, hardware, and systems will eventually reach their end-of-life.  Knowing when and what the response will be to these occurrences will significantly decrease the productivity loss that comes with changing over.

Most importantly, an IT strategic plan should be innovative and include a plan for identifying and implementing new technologies and solutions to give the organization a competitive edge.
